Five Administration Police officers were early Tuesday killed when their vehicle was ambushed by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Milimani area, Lamu County.
The officers were part of a contingent of 15 policemen who were travelling in a truck when it was struck by an improvised explosive device planted by Al Shabaab attackers.
Milimani area is situated 70 kms from Mpeketoni in Lamu County.
Sources say that the APs were heading back to their Kiunga Camp using a truck when it was struck by an explosive planted by the militants.
Two others were seriously injured and are waiting to be airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
According to the source, the remaining soldiers fought back and managed to repulse the attackers.
A heavy contingent of GSU officers was deployed to the area to pursue the attackers.
The attack comes at a time when a security operation undertaken by the KDF and police is still going on in the dense Boni Forest which has been known to harbour Al Shabaab militants in the recent past.
