Somalia and China Discuss The Importance of Lifting The Arms Embargo

The defence Minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur (Jama) has met with the Chinese Ambassador to Somalia, Mr Fei Shengchao, to enhance bilateral relations.

According to the Minister of Defense of Somalia, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur

he discussed the importance of strengthening Somalia and China’s cooperation in promoting peace and security and the importance of lifting the arms embargo with Amb. Fei ShengChao.

´´We discussed the importance of strengthening and bilateral engagement in enhancing peace & security. Discussed the government’s agenda in countering terrorism & the importance of lifting the arms embargo.´´ Minister of Defense of Somalia, Abdikadir Mohamed Nur said.

Minister Nur said he had a fruitful meeting with Mr. Fei and stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations.

The meeting just a day after Somalia urged the UK government to help the nation to convince United Nations (UN) to lift the decades-long arms embargo on Somalia.

Somalia has lately been raising the tempo against Shabaab, cheering on village vigilantes to fight alongside the SNA, while banning Shabaab narratives from the media, and freezing bank accounts linked to the militant group.

But the group has often responded with vengeance, targeting government offices, civil servants, and civilian areas with explosives to avenge lost territory.

The Somali government has been trying to convince the UN to completely lift the arms embargo by the end of this year.

In November, the UN Security Council extended the arms embargo until November next year, arguing Shabaab was still a threat to the country.
