The European Union has pledged 186 million US dollars to support African Union Mission in Somalia or AMISOM.
The deal was signed in AU headquarters in Addis Ababa on Friday came at the request of the African Union to its counterpart European Union in Brussels, Belgium.
The funding is budgeted for 1st June to December 2015 according to the African union officials and will cater salary for peacekeeping soldiers, compensation, and training for Somali national army.
Smail Chergui, the chair of AU peace and security committee has thanked EU for the support saying the donation to AMISOM will help troops strengthen security and recapture new areas from armed group in Somalia.
EU representative to Somalia Mr. Klaus Rudischhauser who is also Deputy EU Secretary General for development and cooperation has said the main reason for the donation is to support the continuous effort of AMISOM operation to stabilize Somalia and fight against armed group Al Shabab.
