Somalia on Tuesday asked for the United Nations Security Council to intervene and end the building of a United Arab Emirates military base in Berbera in the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Somalia’s Ambassador to the UN Abukar Osman told the Security Council that UAE action was against its sovereignty and international laws.
“Two years ago the United Arab Emirates signed an agreement with Somaliland Regional Authorities to establish a UAE military base in Berbera without the consent of the Federal Government of Somalia. The Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group confirmed that the new facilities is underway” Osman said.
“The action taken by the UAE in Somalia are in clear violation of international law the Charter of the United Nations and the norms of international relations and international cooperation” Osman added.
Notably Somalia chose the name Northwestern Regional Administration to refer to Somaliland raising also also the controversial Berbera Port deal.
“we cannot abide any unconstitutional decisions take by a Regional Authority including the Northwestern Region of Somalia (Somaliland)-since such actions would undermine the unity, sovereignty of Somalia which are all guaranteed under our constitution.” Somalia’s statement said
“Therefore the Federal Government of Somalia calls on the Security Council to take necessary steps in accordance with its mandate to maintain international peace and security to put an end to these actions and ensure the implementation of its resolution concerning Somalia” Osman concluded.
Somaliland inked the Berbera Port and Military base deal in March 2017.
