Somalia is more corrupt in 2017 than it was in 2016, a corruption index released by the Transparency International indicates.
The index which ranks 180 countries by their perceived levels of public sector corruption according to experts and business people awarded Somalia 9 points out of 100 where zero is highly corrupt.
In 2016 in Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration, Somalia had scored 10 points meaning the country is more corrupt under President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo.
New Zealand, Denmark scored 89 and 88 points respectively topping the best performing countries while Syria, South Sudan and Somalia scored 14, 12 and 9 respectively.
Former Presidential candidate and leader of opposition party Wadajir Mr. Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame have poked holes on the Farmaajo administration anti-corruption strategy.
“No senior politician or cabinet minister, not a single official has been ever been (sic) jailed for corruption. It seems that there are too few demonstrations of the existence of political will to fight the vice†Warsame tweeted.
“Despite the vacuous and repeated statement that Government has a zero tolerance policy on corruption, Somalia has held the world’s most corrupt country with a score of 10 on the Corruption Perceptions Index 2017“ Warsame tweeted.
Somalia has consistently been the most corrupt country in the world since 2014.
