A statement from the Australian Foreign Affairs office said the donation was aimed at helping Somalis who are facing severe food shortage due to insecurity and prolonged drought.
“Australia is providing $5.5 million in emergency food, clean water and shelter to vulnerable Somali communities” the statement partly said.
“Our support will be delivered through the United Nations and trusted humanitarian partners” it added.
“Australia’s humanitarian contribution will help affected communities improve their agricultural practices and financial management so they can be more resilient in the face of protracted drought” the Foreign Affairs office said.
In 2017, the Australian government gave Somalia $17 million towards dealing with the humanitarian crisis that came with the drought.
Approximately six million people remain in need of humanitarian assistance including more than two million internally displaced people.
