Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire joined leaders from 80 countries in Washington DC to mitigate on humanitarian crisis around the world.
Khaire briefed the forum of Somalia’s recent gains and challenges.
“Our experience clearly shows the need to link between development, peace and security. International community should therefore focus on development solutions for humanitarian problems” Khaire said.
“Experience shows that responding to a crisis only when the casualty count starts, results in increased loss of lives and goes against the principle of humanity. This practice is costly both in terms of human lives and resources utilized” the Premier said in reference to Somalia’s perennial drought.
He said the horn of Africa country is now seeking new approach in dealing with humanitarian crisis.
“To prevent and mitigate man-made and natural disasters, Somalia seeks an approach which invests in long-term development programs and in new and innovative ways of working. A shift to an approach that aggressively pursues sustainable solutions is critical” Khaire said
“Somalia’s friends need to align their support to our new agenda and move away from the business as usual mode to a new way of working towards a peaceful, stable and prosperous Somalia”
The Fragility Forum 2018 was organized by the World Bank.
Six million Somali people remain in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than two million who are displaced
The risk of famine persists due to widespread violence, displacement and consecutive seasons of failed rains.
