Somalia has officially asked the Arab League to intervene in the diplomatic row with Somaliland that followed the recent signing of a tripartite agreement with Ethiopia and a UAE company DP World to lease Berbera Port.
In a letter written by the Somali Embassy in Cairo and sent to all Arab League Foreign Affairs Ministers Somalia terms the agreement “null and void” The letter asserts that the agreement is an interference of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Radio Dalsan has also learnt that Somalia intends to send a similar communication to the Africa Union to protest the concession of the strategic port in the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Following the deal signed in Dubai Ethiopia now controls 19% of the port while Somaliland stake is at 31% and the rest is DP World’s.
The UAE Company CEO issued a statement this week recognising Somaliland as an “independent” country that had a right to sign an agreement without consulting Mogadishu.
