Somali security agencies and African Union peace keeping troops have stepped up security across the major cities in the country to preempt possible Al Shabaab attacks during last days of the holy month of Ramadan.
Extra security checkpoints have been erected especially in the capital Mogadishu which has created huge traffic jams during the morning and evening.
Somali police and AMISOM armored vehicles are also patrolling the streets.
Similar security measure have also been reported from other key cities such as the port city of Kismayo, Baidoa, Beledweyne and Adado which will host the election of central regional state president on Saturday.
Al Shabaab has vowed to intensify attacks against African Union and Somali security forces during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Over 60 African Union peacekeeping troops from Burundi were killed last week after Al Shabaab dawn assault on their base near the capital Mogadishu.
African union peacekeeping troops have since retreated from five bases which according to reports were immediately taken over by Al Shabaab fighters after AMISOM troops left.
