The Banaadir Administration has on Wednesday burnt down expired medical drugs and equipment from Britain.

The medicine and equipment was  part of a 20 plus ton consignment donated to a local community-based organization owned by visually impaired people by One Life Global, a UK  based humanitarian agency.

The Consignment was held at the port of Mogadishu for two weeks after the police and health officials at the port found that it contained expired drugs and equipment.

“The police and health officials at the port found out that there are expired drugs and equipment in the consignment,” Dr. Abdullahi Hassan Mohamed, Director of Banadir health region told the media.

“Today God has made possible for us to burn it in an open place where the public and the media can witness,” he added after the goods were set on fire.

“We allowed the two organization to take what was in good condition and leave all the expired in hands of the police,” said Dr. Mohamed.

He urged the Somali philanthropists and traders to import goods that are in good condition and beneficial to the people.

“We are telling humanitarian agencies who give donations to the Somali people not to give expired things to the people. I am telling organisations who imported these drugs and equipment to confirm their consignments before importing them. I am telling the Somali philanthropists and traders to send good things to the people,” he said.
