Former Somali Prime Minister Mr. Ali Mohamed Gedi has relived the Banaadir status debate asserting the residents of Banaadir region had a constitutional right to seek for self-determination.
Speaking at a ceremony to welcome the newly appointed Governor of Banaadir and Mayor of Mogadishu Mr. Abdirahman Omar Osman “Yarisow” Mr Gedi said the lobby for the rightful status of the city started a long time ago and no one can doubt about.
He asked the new Governor to complete the process that his predecessor had pushed for.
“No party can doubt the status of Mogadishu and the right of the area. And it’s the responsibility of every party since it’s a constitutional right that the stages it has gone through are known”, said Mr Gedi.
The status of Banaadir region where the capital city Mogadishu is has been a contentious topic that led to a fall out between former Governor Thabit Mohamed with President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo and Prime Minister Hassan Kheyre leading to his ousting on Sunday through a presidential decree.
