At least 55 people have been killed and 60 others wounded Sunday in al-Shabab bombings at a restaurant in the southern town of Baidoa in Somalia.
A car packed with explosives blew up near Bader restaurant, shortly before a female suicide bomber detonated inside the dining establishment, according to Somali security officials and witnesses.
‘’Before the suicide attacks took place, people were watching the Manchester United versus Arsenal game,” one witness said Sunday.
Al-Shabab, a Somalia-based militant group, has claimed responsibility for Sunday’s attacks.
The al Qaeda-linked group said Somali government officials were targeted inside the restaurant, according to al-Shabab media.
The suicide bombings come just days after al-Shabab militants attacked a popular park called the Peace Garden as well as the Somali Youth League (SYL) hotel in the capital Mogadishu on Thursday night, killing more than 20 people.
The Somali government has since vowed to increase security in the areas under its control in south and central Somalia.
