Mogadishu, 6th of April 2016 – The Federation of Somali Trade Unions held its General Assembly to elect its leadership.
The General Assembly took place at Maka Al-Mukarama Hotel in Mogadishu. Representatives of the various trade unions attended the assembly. Civil society groups, officials from the Federal Government of Somalia were present as observers in order to ensure that the election is fair and free.
Three candidates shown their interest to the Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions and they were Abdirahman Hassan Omar, Omar Faruk Osman and Mohamed Ibrahim Isak (Pakistan). Omar Faruk Osman didn’t show up as he felt that representatives from the various trade unions will not elect him.
After the election papers count, Mohamed Ibrahim Isak (Pakistan) won overwhelmingly to become the new Secretary General of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions as of today 6th of April 2016.
The new Secretary General stated that he will do all he can to help young people to get jobs in the main stream of the society. He said lack of opportunities and employment for youths are the major obstacle to the recovery of the economy of the country.
