The administration of the Gedo region town of BeledHawo on Sunday burnt Khat worth thousands of dollars imported from Kenya after it impounded a vehicle ferrying the stimulant twigs two days after it was ordered the borders closed.
Beledhawo has been protesting what it claims as an incursion of Somalia land by Kenya.
Kenya started the building of a wall after a series of attacks by Somali militant group Alshabaab.
Early this year residents of BeledHawo protested the presence of KDF soldiers who were on site to construct the wall.
On Saturday BeledHawo closed its border into Kenya.
“BeledHawo had given Mandera residents three days to get whatever they needed from the Somalia side before the closure. We are not allowed to cross over to Somalia” Ahmed Birik a Mandera resident to Radio Dalsan.
Mandera and BeledHawo have been interdependent and this latest closure has affected thousands of residents from both sides.
