Somali opposition says govt ban on peaceful protest unconstitutional

Opposition political parties in Somalia have condemned the move by Mogadishu city authority to ban peaceful protest.

Coalition for Change that brings together main opposition political parties have described the decision by the Mogadishu mayor on Sunday as unconstitutional.

Former Mogadishu mayor who is among the opposition leaders described the move as politically motivated decision.

Mohamud Ahmed Tarsan said there is no constitutional justification on the ban of peaceful protest in the country.

“ We are on election period and there are lots of gatherings, if there is constitutional violation there must be protest,” he said.

“We will not accept it at all and we don’t need any permission from mayor’s office,” he added.

Coalition for change have called for peaceful protest against the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arguing that his constitutional term in office is over and he must step down.

Ministry of Interior recently issued warning to those planning big political meetings and protest without the knowledge of the ministry.
