Somali special forces backed by US helicopters have raided Alshabaab base in Barire, lower Shabelle region.
According to Somali National Intelligence Agency (NISA) the troops captured key Alshabaab figure and arsenal.
Other reports say the troops rescued prisoners from the group during the operation with giving further details on the identity of the freed prisoners held by the armed in Barire jail.
Local residents have confirmed the early morning operation saying they wake up to the sounds of heavy guns and helicopters flying over.
Armed group Alshabaab also confirmed the attack but dismissed loss adding that they repelled what they described as foreign invaders.
