Retired Somali army general says the country may plunge into another ethnic based violence if there is no quick international response to restore order.
Abdullahi Adan Iro told Radio Dalsan during an interview that developments in Burundi may also affect peacekeeping troop’s efforts in Somalia.
Burundi has over 5400 soldiers in Somalia as part of African Union peacekeeping troops in the country.
He said it was wrong idea for the army to embark on the coup decision saying it will only escalate the political crisis in the tiny east African nation.
Iro also warned other African military’s that may be planning coup to rethink adding that the time of military government in the continent is over.
He urged opposing sides in Burundian political spectrum to come into negotiating table to solve the looming crisis.
Burundi army general has earlier today announced the overthrow of President Pierre Nkurunziza who was in Tanzania for East African Community meeting.
Major General Godefroid Niyombareh said a salvation committee had been set up to run the country.
Thousands of protesters have come out in the major streets in the capital, Bujumbura in support of the army coup.
