Regional presidents Mohamed Ali Gaas of Puntland and Abdikarim Hussein Guled of Galmuduug state on Monday signed a peace deal the fifth one since fighting erupted between he two states in 2016.
The signing was held at the Villa Somalia Mogadishuand attended by both President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Prime Minister Abdirashid Omar Sharmake and Special representative of the UN Secretary General in Somalia Michael Keating.
The two presidents agreed to cease all hostilities and withdraw troops to their bases.
They also signed into removal of road blocks erected by both sides to allow free movement of people and goods.
A joint training between police forces from both states awaits to be implemented according to the deal.
The international community has welcomed the peace deal by the two regions.
“This renewed committement to peace and confidence is a critical step to allow a process to resolve underlying issues that are causing the conflict and to build lasting prace” Michael Keating said.
Latest fighting between Puntland and Galkacyo saw at least 30 people killed.
