NUSOJ and UNSOM hold Two Day Training on Safety of Journalists, Reporting on Federalism and State Building Goals for 30 Journalists in Baidoa

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), supported by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), held a two-day workshop for 30 journalists from Baidoa on safety, federalism and state-buildings goals on 8-9 August, 2015

The Minister of Information of the Interim South West Administration (ISWA), Hassan Abdi Mohamed, and the Secretary General of NUSOJ, Mohamed Ibrahim, officially opened the workshop.

“I thank those who took part in the facilitation and organizing of this workshop for the South West journalists,” Mr. Mohamed said.
“I also want to extend my sincerest thanks and appreciation to UNSOM for facilitating this important workshop for our journalists who have been working under a difficult environment.

Furthermore, I want to highlight the role of NUSOJ for standing up for the journalists wherever they are and being a shoulder to lean on,” he said.

The Secretary-General of NUSOJ, Mohamed Ibrahim, commended the journalists for their willingness to learn. He emphasized that this workshop was the first of its kind to be held in Baidoa for journalists from the South West region.

“The workshop focused on personal safety, reporting on federalism and the New Deal Compact, covering war and conflict, ethical reporting and reporting on state-building and political transformation in Somalia,” Mr. Ibrahim said.

In addition to enhancing the journalists’ understanding of the ongoing federalism in Somalia and the New Deal Compact, the workshop provided them with survival tips when working in hostile environments.
