UK to send soldiers to help train Somali troops

UK Prime Minister Theresa May has ordered new British troops to Somalia over 18 months to strengthen local forces’ training.

Mrs. May announced the deployment on Tuesday at the United Nations in New York saying it is vital to build the capacity of Somali security forces.

“It is vital that as an international community we continue to support countries in the region that are contributing thousands of troops, and that we continue to build the capacity of Somali security forces. PM May said:

Teresa May called upon other world powers to help rebuild Somali security agencies in terms of training and equipment.

“That is why the UK is now going to increase further our security support, and we will be calling on others to do the same.” She said

UK currently has 70 soldiers in Somalia but the new deployments will double it efforts on the ground to provide support for African union troops and Somali National Army.

The troops will be stationed regions outside the capital city of Mogadishu and will be on a rotation and teach Somali troops to detect roadside bombs and among other key techniques.
