Somali media strategy conference kicks off in Mogadishu amid controversial media law

Somali Deputy Prime Minister Omar Arte has opened two days media strategy conference in Mogadishu.

International organizations, Media directors, owners, Journalists and regional state information ministers are attending the high level meeting which will impact on the future of the sector in Somalia.

The PM who spoke at the opening ceremony has urged the media to play key role in the rebuilding the nation.

“We want responsible media for this recovery country we don’t need media that destroying” he said.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed the controversial media law days ago that media advocacy and journalists criticized.

National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) have welcomed the signing but called for review of some clauses in the new media law.

SIMHA chairman Hassan Ali Gesey supported approval of the new law by the president but called for urgent review on some articles of the new Somali media law.

“We need serious review on penalty on editors and qualification for Journalists which I think limits several talented young journalists,” said Hassan Ali Gesey.

National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) called for careful review of the contentious articles before full implementation of the law.
