Former Alshabaab media representative sentence to death

Somali Military Court in Mogadishu has on Thursday sentenced to death former Alshabaab media officer.

Hassan Hanafi was found guilty of killing one Journalist and taking part death of other five Somali Journalists during armed group control in the country.

Hanafi, 30, has said he joined Al Shabaab in 2008 when he was working as a journalist for a local Somali broadcaster.

He was arrested in neighboring Kenya last year and then extradited to Somalia for trial.

Chairman of the Somali military court Hassan Ali has told reporters that Hanafi  will be put to death sentence “as soon as possible.”

The al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab was pushed out of Mogadishu by African Union peacekeeping forces in 2011 but has remained great threat in Somalia, launching frequent attacks in its bid to overthrow the Western-backed government.

The group also carried out wave of attacks in Neighboring Kenya and Uganda.
