Italian President, H.E. Sergio Materalla hs received credentials letters from Somalia’s Somalia’s new ambassador to Italy, Ambassador H.E. Abdirahman Sh. Isse. Ambassador Abdirahman handed over his credentials in a brief event at the state house in Rome.

He also presented a message from the Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to President Sergio. The Somali diplomat received a warm reception at the  state house.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud accepted the credentials of the new Italian ambassador, Mr Farbizio Marcelli, in Mogadishu on June 2014.

The Somali and Italian governments have a long relationship.

Relations between the modern-day territories of Somalia and Italy stretch back to antiquity. During the Roman empire centuries the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, among other documents, reports early commercial exchanges between traders inhabiting city-states on the northern Somali littoral with Roman merchants. Numerous artefacts dating from this period have been uncovered in Somalia, such as at the Damo site in the Puntland region.
