Somali Foreign Affairs Minister Abdirizak Mohamed has met with AU Peace and Security Commissioner Bankole Adeoye.
In a Twitter post, the foreign affairs minister said he discussed elections with AU Peace and Security Commissioner as the Horn of the African Nation kicked off Senate polls on Thursday in Kismayo.
”I had a productive meeting with Amb Bankole Adeoye, AU PAPS Commissioner. We discussed the way forward for an accountable, transparent and responsive support mission. I also briefed the commissioner on the ongoing Somalia federal elections,” Somali Foreign Affairs Minister Abdirizak Mohamed said.
The meeting comes barely two weeks after the Somali government rejected proposals to modify the African Union peacekeeping forces for an expanded role.
”In response to AU Independent Assessment Team’s Report, the Somali Government held an inter-ministerial meeting to discuss the report and has rejected from the outset the report’s finding and recommendations and will issue a formal statement,” Somali government spokesman Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu said in a statement.
