Somali American Rep in the US Congress Ilhan Omar has termed Puntland historic one man one vote municipal elections a success.
In a Twitter post, the Somali-American congresswoman said that the local council elections will be a blueprint of Somalia’s countrywide elections.
”Congratulations, Somalia will see these elections take place countrywide,” Ilhan Omar said.
On Monday, over 40,000 voters turned up for the local councillors elections held in Qardho, Eyl and Ufayn districts.
The United Nations and other international partners lauded local elections in the Puntland state.
”The United Nations in Somalia commends the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC), the government and people of Puntland for their commitment to holding direct elections, as enshrined in Puntland’s Constitution,” a statement from the UN read in part.
Somali Leaders have been praising the move to have people elect their leaders for the first time.
Somalia held the last one-person-one-vote election in Somalia 1969 and the resulting government did not last the following year.
