Somalia Interior Minister Confirms Turkey's Bayraktar TB2 drones join offensive against al-Shabab
The government of Somalia last week confirmed the news that the planes produced by Turkey, Baykar, which is related to the family of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, are now operating in Somalia.
Somalia’s Interior Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, speaking in a debate in Mogadishu, said that Turkish drones are providing aerial and military reconnaissance.
“The United States government is leading the way, and we are really grateful that they are supporting us in the air and carrying out airstrikes against the terrorist group. he also provides intelligence support,” said Fiqi.
The interior minister said that Turkish drone operators work closely with Somali commanders, who provide target coordination, to monitor Al-Shabaab activities.
Somalia has shared deep military cooperation with Turkey for the past 10 years.
According to analysts, this new move by Ankara is considered to be of great help in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab.
