How Khalid Abdullahi Evaded Poverty To Be Somalia's Top Student

For young Khalid Abdullahi, no amount of challenge could come between him and succeeding in Secondary School exams as he went against all odds to beat poverty and distance to get the best mark in Somalia.

Young Khalid´s mother revealed to Dalsan how she did odd jobs to make ends meet.

´´I worked extra hard, even harder so that he was not chased away from school for fees,” Faduma Mohamud Roble, the mother of the student who emerged top student said.

The boy whose dream school is to join university attributed his success to hard work and putting in extra hours.

“I expected to pass but not being Somalia´s top. Studying extra hours and in my free time is what has led to this success,” he said as he acknowledged and thanked God and his parents for his success.

He said he wants to become an Engineer if he gets the chance to join university.

His mother expressed joy following her son’s success even though she noted that she did not expect him to be ranked among the top performers in the country.

“I knew he would do well but not this much. Khalid has been a self-driven child and he has always given me an easy time.”

In results released Tuesday by The Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, Khalid of Iftin Warta Nabada Secondary School , Mogadishu, was ranked the best in the country.
