Al-Shabaab militants attack and overruns a military base in Af-Urur village in Puntland's Bari region
Al- Shabaab militant group have on Sunday morning attacked a military base in
Af-Urur village of Puntland’s Bari region.
The militant group are reported to have waged the attack with mortars and small arms fire before a heavy gun battle ensued between them and the Puntland security forces.
The attack which began moments before dawn prayers saw the insurgents loot heavy machinery including ammunition, weapons and military vehicles belonging to the Puntland regional forces.
Al-Shabaab has at several times attacked the Af-Urur village which is approximately 70km from the port city of Bosaso.
In June 2017, the militants ambushed the Af-Urur village killing over 50 Puntland soldiers after storming and seizing control of the Puntland military base in the village.
The Al-Qaeda affiliate group- Al-Shabab has recently stepped up their attacks on government officials, elected leaders and civilians across the country with the most recent being the attack at Halane camp where they claimed to have killed dozens of foreign Nationals.
In Beledweyne town, 48 people were killed in tripartite bombings including MP Amina Mohamed Abdi who was seeking re-election and injured scores of others.
Al-Shabab wants to overthrow the internationally backed Federal government of Somalia and impose a strict interpretation of the Islamic Sharia.
