HirShabelle State to hold today elections of two seats of the House of People
Somalia’s HirShabelle state is today set to hold elections for two contested seats in Beletweyne town.
According to HirShabelle State Elections Implementation Team, candidates contesting for the two seats that are up for grabs include Banadir Regional Administration Secretary Hiirey, former MP Ibrahim Habeb.
Former Somali Minister of Education, Abdullahi Godah Barre is also among those contesting to defend their seats.
The seats that are up for grab are;
Last week, the federal states of South West and Galmudug concluded the election of their representatives, but 40 of the 275 seats in the lower house remained to be filled in three states (Jubaland, Hirshabelle, Puntland).
The closure of the lower house elections is a crucial step towards the election of a new president. Under Somalia’s complex system, federal-state assemblies and delegates invested by a myriad of clans and sub-clans choose lawmakers who then appoint the president.
