Hirshabelle President Ali Gudlawe arrives in Beledweyne amid tension in the town

Hirshabelle State President Ali Abdullahi Gudlawe has arrived in Beledweyne on Sunday for the first time since he took over the mantle of presidency in 2020.

Gudlawe accompanied by high delegation were welcomed at Ugas Khalif airport by his vice president Yussuf Dabageed, Hiraan governor, senior government officials and large members of the public.

President Gudlawe is expected to hold series of meetings with regional and city administration, traditional elders and the community who are in support of his presidency.

Security was beefed up ahead of his visit as government troops were deployed on the streets to secure the town and closed main roads amid tension in the town as several mortar shells hit Ugaas Khalif airport.

However, clan militia loyal to former Somali National Army (SNA) officer Nur Dheere were seen on the streets with heavy machines mounted vehicles.

The militia vowed to block Gudlawe from visiting the town and said he will responsible for any consequences that will come out of his visit.

This comes weeks after the deployment of Haramacad police and Gorgor military forces to quell the tension in the town.
Their deployment however stoked outrage from the regional and Federal government leaders who called for their immediate withdrawal from the town saying they were being used to meddle and interfere with the elections of the 25 Parliamentary seats that are in the town.

Similar attempt by Gudlawe to visit the town last month was thwarted by residents who staged opposition against his visit saying he is not welcomed in the town.
