At least 9 killed as mini bus hits landmine in Southern Somalia

At least nine people were killed and two others wounded on Friday when a minibus they were travelling in ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted on the outskirts of Kismayo in Somalia’s Jubbaland state.

The vehicle was heading to the southern port city of Kismayo when an explosion ripped through their vehicle as it hit what was believed to be a landmine according to Kismayo Mayor Omar Faraweyne.

“This was a tragic incident. Nine people, all innocent civilians, were killed and two others were injured in the blast that destroyed a minibus carrying those people,” said Omar Faraweyne, who was attending the funeral of those killed in the explosion.

The mayor blamed the attack on the militant group Al-Shabaab have been carrying out similar attacks in the past.

The militant group al-Shabab was driven out of Kismayo the port has been relatively peaceful.

The militants have been carrying out regular attacks in the capital Mogadishu, despite the heavy presence of African Union peacekeepers and US-trained Somali troops.

Al-Shabab is affiliated with al-Qaeda and remains a powerful presence in rural Somalia.
