Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for killing MP aspirant in Mogadishu
Al-Shabaab militants have claimed responsibility for killing former Hiiraan governor of Somalia’s Hiiraan region, Abdirahman Ibrahim Ma’ow days after announcing that he’s vying for a seat in the upcoming HirShabelle regional parliamentary selection.
The former Hiiraan region governor was shot dead in Mogadishu’s Wadajir district last night.
He was shot dead shortly after exiting a Mosque in the Wadajir district of Mogadishu after praying Isha (the nightly prayer).
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the upper torso.
The group which has been waging a violent insurgency in the Horn of the African nation for over a decade claimed responsibility for the killing via online.
Abdirahman was a former official in the Islamic Courts Union and later became the ICU appointed governor of the Hiiraan region prior to the American led Ethiopian invasion in 2006.
He becomes the first parliamentary candidate to be killed in Mogadishu in this electoral cycle.
