Kenya plays down recognizing Somaliland as an independent Countr

Kenya Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amb. Raychelle Omamo has said that the Kenya government will not recognize Somaliland as an independent country.

Amb. Omamo said that the Somaliland government is yet to submit any application or request to the Kenya government for its urge to be recognized as an independent country thus said the government will continue engaging and treating Somaliland as a regional State in Somalia.

The remarks by Amb. Omamo comes barely three days after the UK parliament tabled and debated a motion for the recognition of Somaliland as independent country.

The motion which was tabled by Gavin Williamson, a conservative MP was later adjourned by the house with a unanimity rule that Hargeisa must first engage with Mogadishu based central government to decide on their posterity.

Somaliland president Muse Bihi Abdi in a official state to Kenya in December 2020 held talks with president Uhuru Kenyatta and inked a deal to have direct flights from and to Nairobi- Hargeisa.

Somaliland the defacto sovereign state in Somalia has seeking international recognition since 1991 when it announced that had seceded from the entire Somalia however it remains to be treated as an autonomous region within Somalia.
