Electoral Commission To Elect Chairman Today

Somalia’s Federal Electoral Implementation Team is set to elect a new chairman on Saturday in Mogadishu.

Today’s election is also marked by a fierce battle between the country’s top leaders, Farmajo and Roble, who are currently embroiled in a bitter feud.

Among those contesting for the position is Abdiaziz Abdirahman Yusuf who has good relations with all the leaders of the regional states, the office of the PM and the Electoral Committees of the Federal and Regional government.

”The Federal Electoral Commission (FEIT) will elect a chairman on Saturday, 15, January in Mogadishu.” the commission said in a statement.

The former chairman of the Federal Electoral Implementation Team was sacked last month after a near-unanimous vote by members of the 18-person committee.

Mohamed Hassan Irro was removed as the leader of Somalia’s electoral commission by a vote of 15-3. Irro’s Deputy, Mowlid Matan, chaired the vote. The commission accused irro of corruption and meddling in politics.

He also came under fire for validating the electoral results of acting NISA director Yasin Farey, despite an avalanche of complaints regarding the process.
