UN airport terminal in Mogadishu reopens

The Somali government has reportedly reopened the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) passenger operations facility at the Aden Adde International Airport in the capital Mogadishu.

MOVCON terminal is used by the UN staff and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) who reside in Halane camp.

The order to reopen the UN terminal was reportedly issued by Somalia’s Minister of Security Abdullahi Mohamed Nur, following talks between the minister and diplomats at Halane Camp.

The terminal was set up at the Aden Adde International Airport to facilitate the clearance and movement of forces and diplomats working for AMISOM and UN.

Last month, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to the UN and Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) which provides logistics support to AMISOM and directed the closure of MOVCON terminal.

The Somali government alleged that the terminal was used by unauthorised travellers with no requisite documents and smuggling of ‘uncontrolled commodities’.

The government also accused the UN of landing flights Aden Adde Airport without prior submission of essential documents such as the manifest through the official immigration communication channels.
