Somalia receives first batch of Turkey’s TB2 drones
Somalia has received the first batch of Turkey’s globally-lauded Bayraktar TB2 drones in the past week.
According to sources, the Turkish UCAVs will first be used in reconnaissance missions and have yet to take part in combat operations.
According to sources, Somali troops will receive special training soon ahead of combat missions.
The Bayraktar TB2 armed UAV was developed and manufactured by Turkish defence company Baykar Technologies and has been used by the Turkish Armed Forces and the country’s Security Directorate since 2015.
Three years ago, Turkey opened its biggest overseas military base in Somalia to have military leverage in hotspots in the region.
Apart from its forward-basing, Ankara also trains Turkish-speaking Somali soldiers and has transferred tactical arms to the arsenal of the Somali military.
