Farmaajo meets Somalia's ICJ defence team

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo on Saturday received at the Presidential Palace Somalia’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) defence team.

In a brief statement, the president said it was a struggle for justice based on knowledge, courage, patriotism, protection of the nation and defence of the people and the country.

”We celebrate our victorious Somalia ICJ defence team including Dr Muna Sharman, late Eng. Mohamed Salihi for their courage, patriotism & defence of our Somali Soil in the maritime case which united us as a nation,” president Farmaajo said.

On the 12th of this month, the UN court awarded Somalia control of most of a potential oil- and a gas-rich chunk of the Indian Ocean after a bitter legal battle with neighbouring Kenya over their sea border.

The court established a new maritime boundary between the two countries and the disputed waters were ruled in Somalia. But a few have also been excluded from Somalia’s territorial claims, starting after the 12-mile direct line to the land border.

But the decision was rejected by Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta.

Somalia first filed the maritime border dispute case in August 2014 to determine the delimitation of 100,000 sq km (38,000 sq miles) of the Indian Ocean claimed by both countries.
