SNA kills senior Al-Shabaab commander in Lower Shabelle region
Somali National Army (SNA) killed several fighters including a senior commander in an operation in the Lower Shabelle region, military officials confirmed.
Nuh Dhagool, a senior al-Shabaab commander who was extracting money from the locals was killed Friday night in the operation in Aliow-Borow village.
“Our forces killed several Al-Shabaab militants including a high-rank militant commander in the operation. The operation was successful as planned. Al-Shabaab was defeated and was inflicted heavy casualties,” said Hassan Mohamed Osman, the commander of the 16th Brigade of Danab.
Several of his bodyguards were also eliminated in the gunfight, according to the military.
The operation comes amid increasing attacks by the militants in the capital Mogadishu and other cities.
The Somali-based al-Qaeda-affiliated group al-Shabaab has been fighting against the Somali government and African peacekeeping mission forces in Somalia for over a decade.
