Somali Military Claims Killing 70 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Middle Shabelle

Somali National Army (SNA) on Thursday said that it killed over 70 Somali-based al-Shabaab militant group members in the ongoing military operation in Middle Shabelle region.

Col. Ali Hashi, Somali military spokesman, told media State Radio that the military also liberated several villages in the operation.

“The troops fought in many areas and inflicted heavy casualties on Al-Shabaab. The operation took place in Warta Jilaable which is now under control of the military,” said Col. Ali Hashi.

The commander of the 60th brigade of SNA Col. Mohamed Abdi Wahid was among those killed in the operation.

Somali Premier Mohamed Hussein Roble was among the leaders who condoled    

on the death of the commander.

“May God have mercy on our brother Major Mohamed Abdiwahid who passed away today while defending his country and his people from a formidable enemy,” Prime Minister Roble said.

Al-Shabaab fighters claimed victory via online saying they killed 18 soldiers.

Somali military in the past weeks heightened operations weed out the militants in Middle Shabelle region killing over 100 militants.
