President Farmaajo receives COVID-19 vaccine

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo received his COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, a day after the horn of the African nation received 300,000 doses from the COVAX.

Somalia began the vaccination roll out to health workers, security personnel, the elderly and people with chronic health conditions on Tuesday.

“I expressed faith in the Vaccination efforts by endorsing it myself earlier today as we continue distributing it to ensure the protection of our citizens especially Frontline workers”. Farmaajo said.

”Let us flatten the curve by adhering to the safety measures to Stop Covid,” he added.

Farmaajo received his first dose of the vaccine at Villa Somalia while the health Minister was vaccinated at De Martini Hospital.

Somalia on Monday received 300,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine from the international COVAX vaccine initiative.

The ministry of health recorded a total of 9,190 cases the since mid-March last year when the country recorded its first case.

29 more people were reported to have recovered from the disease; hence the total number of recoveries is now at 4,259.

12 people have succumbed to coronavirus in the country, the total number of fatalities now being 367.

Somali government announced the suspension of schools and universities for two weeks due to a surge in COVID-19 infections.

The government also banned public gatherings and demonstrations in the country.
