Senate Elections Postponed to January
The much awaited senate elections has been been postponed to January 2021 the Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) has announced
In a statement, the committee said that it has agreed with the Heads of State of the Federal Member States that the application process for the Upper House candidates ends on 5 January 2021, while the race for the Upper House seats is scheduled to take place between 7-14 January 2021.
The committee said the change in the schedule came at the request of the Electoral Commission from Galmudug State President Ahmed Abdi Kariye Qoorqoor to postpone the Upper House elections.
“By the time we announce, the draft work will be completed to process the applications of the candidates and prepare the materials and environment for the work of the Federal and State Election Commission,” the commission said in a statement.
Somalia missed the first deadline to hold parliamentary elections Dec. 1 as agreed by the federal government and six regional states earlier this year.
