PRESS RELEASE: London Somalia Conference 2017

On Thursday 11 May the UK co-hosted a major international conference with the United Nations and Federal Government of Somalia.

The London Somalia Conference at Lancaster House brought together leaders from around the world to accelerate progress on security sector reform, build on the humanitarian response to the ongoing drought and agree the new international partnership needed to keep Somalia on course for increased peace and prosperity.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May opened the conference. Other speakers included President Farmaajo, UN Secretary General Guterres, Chairperson Faki of the African Union and the UK’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, International Development Secretary Priti Patel and Defence Secretary Michael Fallon.

A Security Pact was agreed at the conference, adopted by Somalia and the international community, with commitments from both sides to ensure sustainable, long-term security. The Conference also adopted a New Partnership for Somalia, re-committing those present to working together and holding each other to account to deliver the vital support and reforms that Somalia needs over the next four years.

The UK also reaffirmed its commitment to preventing a famine, and joined the United Nations in calling on the international community to urgently step up their support before it is too late.  Britain is leading the way in responding to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia, providing food, water and medicine to over a million people.
