Somali parliament approves election model agreement

A joint Somali parliament session has on Saturday approved the recently signed election agreement between the federal government and the federal member’s states.

Speaker of the Somali parliament Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman said lawmakers said 252 lawmakers endorsed the political agreement while one member declined.

Last week president Farmaajo the federal member’s states and the governor of Banadir signed the approved model of the election following four days of crucial talks.

close to 30,000 delegates will elect the 275 member Lower House following the addition of 50 voters in the 2020/21 Model up from 51 in the 2016 version.

The electoral model is an enhanced version of the 2016 indirect election. It seeks to increase the size of the electorate by almost 6 times.

The approval of the agrrement follows a meeting between president Farmajo and the speaker of the parliament last week.
