Director-General calls for investigation into killing of journalist Mohamed Isse Hassan in Somalia

UNESO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of television journalist Mohamed Isse Hassan who died in a suicide car bomb attack in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, on 29 October.

It was part of a series of two blasts that killed over 120 people and injured 300 plus others.

´´I condemn the attack that claimed the life of Mohamed Isse Hassan along with so many others. One attack alone is senseless, but deliberately targeting those whose job it is to rush to the scene to provide help and inform the world is an especially grave act. I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and prosecute those responsible for it.´´ Audrey Azoulay UNESCO Director-General said.

Mohamed Isse Hassan, a well-known journalist for Universal Somali TV, was reporting on the first bomb attack near the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education in Mogadishu when a second such attack took place.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
