Affey appointed UNHCR special envoy on Somali refugees

United Nations High Comissioner for Refugees UNHCR has appointed Mohamed Abdi Affey as special envoy for Somali refugees.

Letter of appointment from UNHCR high commissioner confirmed that the special envoy on the Somali Refugee Situation for an initial duration of six months.

“I have decided to appoint Mr. Mohamed Abdi Affey to act as my Special Envoy on the Somali Refugee Situation for an initial duration of six months.”

The Special Envoy, who will be based in Nairobi will report directly to UNHCR commission in Geneva and work in close coordination with the Regional Bureau Director for Africa.

He will complement and support, at the regional level, those of UNHCR Representatives in the concerned countries. He will also closely liaise and coordinate with relevant external partners and stakeholders including regional institutions to advance the above objectives.

Mr. Affey has extensive regional experience, notably through his previous function as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD)’s Special Envoy to Somalia.
